The best way to explain this series is to take Lord of the Rings, toss in a shade more comedy, inject a bit of Welsh mythology into the story, throw in a coming-of-age theme and aim the whole thing at kids. And while the series targets kids, adults will also quite enjoy the series too.
Like all good literature, it's a story that can appeal to all ages. There's a cast of interestingly quirky characters and a fast-paced plot that will keep you turning the pages without pause. It makes for perfect reading to your kids right before bedtime and hey, you might even find yourself slipping off to read it on your own time.

'Narnia represents everything that is most hateful about religion'
Garner draws heavily from Norse and Celtic mythology, infusing quite a bit of it into the backstory of the novel. Theres even a bit of Narnia in here as well with the story incorporating the British school kids transported to a magical world to save the day conceit.
But this is no copy of Tolkien or Narnia its a fantasy tale thats completely unique in its own right. A young adult novel with an ample amount of charm. Inkheart is through and through a very character-driven novel and one that takes a bit of reading to get into. Its not as action packed as some fantasy with splashy magical effects and giant battles thrown around every few pages.
But the strong characters more than make up for the slower paced reading. Fans of Harry Potter will enjoy this story. Artemis combines the astuteness of Sherlock Holmes with the sangfroid of James Bond and the attitude of Attila the Hun. These aren't the fairies of bedtime stories. There were lots of twists and turns and littl This book should have been called Sahara Rising. There were lots of twists and turns and little side stories that kept you guessing and hardly a dull moment, and I loved it that there was no loose ends. It's a great debut novel and a great start to a series. Jul 19, Charlotte rated it liked it. The things I enjoyed most about this were the many different characters. They all brought something extra to the story. It is a really well written book, and although I usually read ones with more dialogue, I think it worked to have less in this book.
From the beginning, it was pretty intense, but enjoyable, and a really well thought out idea :. A New Dawn is a fantastic read; with captivating narrative, great descriptions, and characters you come to think of as read. The story is face-paced, and gripping; with hardly any dull moments. Ann Barlow has proven herself to be a fantastic author, and I'm looking forward to the second book of the Guardian Chronicles; as well as all her future writings.
Jul 19, D. After reading both of Barlow's book together. Indeed at first the book starts out, and confusion set. However, after fully reading it and letting the story grip me, I really did enjoy it. Loving the story line and the originality. Actually this is a very good Epic story. A little complex in the beginning. But over all a great book! You should definitely check it out!! Jul 09, Sisu rated it it was amazing. A bit confusing and bounced between characters a lot. Left me with a lot of questions at the end that I'm sure will be clarified with the next book.
Once I got used to the style of writing, I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to reading the next book. Dec 22, Paddy O'callaghan rated it it was amazing. What a brilliant book; The protagonist, Sahara, is just a normal woman with lots problems, and the author deftly guides us through the story of how she regains control of her life, and solves them.
Rita West I want to be Sahara Driver! Not only is she gorgeous but she gets to kick some serious ass. Although I felt it was obvious that Nigel would soon be history I still loved it when she got her own back on him. My fave part was when she was building up her powers, it was very gripping. It will be a good read when it is finished. Aug 26, Cecilia rather barefoot than bookless rated it it was ok. I really hate this, I hate giving bad reviews. I wish I could just give everyone 5 stars but that wouldnt be very honest, now would it?
Ever once and again you get a book for review that you just dont like all that much. This was one of those books. I really thought I would like it. The synopsis sounded promising so Of course I wanted to give it a chance. But it ended up being a 2 or 2.
I am going to tell you why. The idea of this book is a good one, I really believe in that. B I really hate this, I hate giving bad reviews. But, and here comes the but, it was very confusing. There were a lot of characters to deal with in this book. Well logically I know it was about Sahara but but it really was about everyone in the book. It is impossible to keep track of everyone that is introduced in this book. And the story just keeps jumping from character to character and back again. And from place to place.
I just feel like to much is happening to too many people. OMG did that even make any sense? And because of the fact that there so many people and so many events happening in this book it felt kind of skin-deep. I wanted more depth in this story, so it fell kind of flat to me. I would not really recommend this book unless you like this sort of story.
I usually read a book in a few days. Jul 21, Jasmin rated it liked it. The main character in this book is Sahara, who has been in several accidents and always survived. Other people, including her parents and her brother have died. She believes it is bad luck sitting in a car or train with her. She is in a relationship with Nigel, who turns out to be abusive. Sahara leaves him and hides out in another town. After a few weeks he finds her and threatens to hurt her again.
Sahara get's really angry and all of a sudden she has abilities she never new existed. From that The main character in this book is Sahara, who has been in several accidents and always survived. From that day on her life changes completely. She learns about a world where different not human creatures exist. One of them is Romero who is her Guardian. He is there to protect her and has been protecting her family since the s. Romero was captured by Barak and can only communicate with Sahara though her thoughts. When I read the synopsis of this book I though it sounded really good and I was excited to start reading it.
The storyline started fast paced and as long as I learned more about Sahara, her relationships to her grandmother and her boyfriend I really felt contempt reading it. But the further the storyline progressed the slower it got in my opinion. It felt really flat to me and I was always hoping to find the arch to more suspense when I turned the next page. Unfortunately, there never was one. Furthermore, I felt that there were too many characters involved.
Some were not properly introduced and I sometimes was confused as to who they were. I think there could have been done much more with the story if the focus had been on fewer characters and their backstories.
- Resurrection (Oxford Worlds Classics).
- Pirates, Pirates! (A Rogues Tale Book 3).
- Trail of Tears: The Rise and Fall of the Cherokee Nation.
As it was most of the characters weren't given the depths I was hoping for. Feb 10, Denise Connolly Connolly rated it it was amazing. Really enjoyed this book, quite different and more adult read. It tells the story of 2 Others, Evil v's Good, who are battling against each other. Earth's future hangs in the balance. The story revolves around unlucky Sahara who is a battered girlfriend whose life suddenly changes when she starts hearing voices and develops super powers. She goes on a quest to rescue the Good Other from imprisonment by the Evil Other.
The spelling and grammar is a little hit and miss but doesn't spoil the story. This writer keeps you interested and guessing aspects of the story-line and where this is all going and gives you glimpses of insight as you go along which is refreshing as it's not all out there from the word go but you feel like you're gaining insight as the story continues. There are two more books to this series and this book I read on Amazon Unlimited but then went looking for the second and third book and they are not available on Amazon.
I would pay for these books but only available in paperback or hardback. Hopefully amazon will add these books to kindle and I can read them! Jul 21, Sara Shrieves rated it really liked it. I thought the concept of the story was interesting. I liked Sahara as the heroine, and Romero was good too. But I felt that the one thing that kept me from making this a 4 star, was that the beginning was somewhat of a slow start, and that Barlow used too many secondary characters, many with their own chapters, thereby causing some confusion, especially early on. But Ann Barlow did a good job with her overall writing leading to the climatic ending.

Ann Barlow was very fortunate with her book. I think the Sahara's saga and the Guardians is amazing! The narrative shows us how love and purity of heart must be among all of mankind. I know it's just the first volume, but I'm already thinking on how Sahara will handle with the evil in the next books! Trevor Waite reviewed on on Aug. Once I started this book I couldnt put it down. Sahara really captivated me from the beginning. Loved the climax it was very imaginative and the end, I love gore. I found the pace of the book was excellent and there was never a dull moment except perhaps the grannie but other than that some really good characters.
